Did early 261's have side motor mounts?

I know the early V8's didn't have side motor mounts, they didn't get them until 1958. Are the 261's the same?

I have a 1956 4400 with a 261 (casting number 3769925) and no serial number stamped on the pad. It has three bosses on each side for motor mounts, does this make it a transplant? Would this be the "FULL FLOW" motor?

Thanks,

Mike B smile

Hy Mike B, I know our Canadian Pontiac 261s would have had them, and I know there are differences between the car and truck engines as far as the oil gallery plugs on the side of the block are concerned. As 261s were never installed in American cars, I'm not sure if they would have them or not. I'll check some of my truck 261s and see what I find.

Mike B,

Here are locations of various casting codes. The date casting codes (for the block and for the head) will help you figure out what you have.

My 1959 and 1960 USA 261s have side bosses and they were drilled (but I do not know if they were for side motor mounts)?

Mike B, Re. this 261 would be full pressure oiling but not full flow filtering. As far as I know the only full flow filter motor was the 261s with the LARGE 1/2" pipe thread oil lines out to the giant filter. And these could be set up for full flow filtering only if the plug on the driver's side is pushed in, if it's out it would bypass the filter. Not sure what year these large oil lines began, earlier ones also can be modified for full filtering.

Re. the side motor mounts I'm not 100% sure, varies by year but my '61 261 has dilled side mount bosses in a large triangle lay out. Where my early 55 1st series 261 has different bosses which I believe are like the early 50s passenger but not drilled out. I can shoot some pics if you need, send me a pm.
