The Red Hot Chilli Pipers from Scotland.

Not what you'd call traditional but some young 'uns have put a new twist on bagpipe music.

And whilst on a Scottish note,how could I possibly forget The Proclaimers.

Bagpipes and modern instruments blended together ... that is interesting. Good for a change.

The harmonies on the Proclaimers music is incredible! The the tunes are quite infectious ... the kind you can't get out of the head, and you end up listening to it once and then whistling it the rest of the day. Great!

Oh, aye ... "The Flower of Scotland" is beautiful. It made my Scottish blood very happy to listen to it. ... I'll be looking for some Proclaimers music on iTunes.

Hey Carol, try finding a group named "Normaal" They're pretty good, from a small area of Holland that has it's own language, called "plat", one that I speak fluently.

It's great that this band is using plat in their songs. Perhaps the language will grow in popularity. The band is good, I like the sound. Thanks for the recommend!

Due to linguistic interest, have you ever visited an Amish or Mennonite community and talked with any of the members? I hear their commonly used language closely resembles plat, though I found that they understand hoch deutsch as well.

Have you heard of them before Husker? I hope you like them, take a couple listens, a good introductory album is Agaetis Byrjun which was technically their 2nd but the first that had some acclaim. Von was the first album which in Icelandic means Hope. Enjoy!

no, I had not heard of them before. I do really like their sound, and Icelandic as a language is interesting sounding as well. I will definitely check out their stuff.

How did you run across them, if I may ask?

I have been a fan for a long time, I first saw them when i was 12 yrs old, they were doing a special show on tv for HBO Reverb and I checked them out online and they had an old video uploaded from a 1998 icelandic music film. They are my favorite band. Since then I have always wanted to visit Iceland or live there but have not been yet! I was checking into taking my 50 chevy over via ship but they told me the wheelbase is too big! =/ I have seen them live twice by the way and I would HIGHLY suggest seeing them.

Also Husker, buy their dvd called Heima, it was all filmed in Iceland and gives you insight into Icelandic culture, especially in the extra features.

I will definitely check on the DVD. I have a PAL DVD player, so it won't matter which format it's in.

I've been to Reykjavik, btw. Well, the airport. Coming back from Germany 22 years ago, one of the engines on my plane had troubles so they made an unscheduled emergency stop there for repairs. We were stranded in the airport for six hours. We couldn't leave because we had no papers for Iceland. I will have to say, that the airport, at least at that time, was the most beautiful airport I've ever been in! Big skylights and windows everywhere with lots of stained glass panels hanging from the ceilings. Oh, and the gift shop made me wish I wasn't a college kid with no money or visa card. yikes! The icelandic sweaters that I could've bought for only $50-75 (mind you this was 22 years ago)!! OH, here in the US, they sell now for $300 - $600 each! Oh well, that's life. I would LOVE to go back, and actually get to leave the airport this time. LOL
