I have a 1948 chev and put in a one wire alternator. I ran the big wire to the starter and added a smaller wire to the ammeter then to the battery. It is reading an output around 14.60 but the needle does not move. I changed from both sides of the ammeter but the needle still does not move. Is this telling me that the ammeter is no good. Thanks

Hy first48, in order for the ammeter to function correctly all the current going to charge the battery must pass through it. By puting the large wire to the battery you have effectively bypassed the ammeter, connect the large wire from the alternator to the ammeter and the other side of the ammeter to the batery or the starter power in stud, hope that helps.

3B has it exactly right. You have the ammeter effectively bypassed.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, it's an electrical problem
