If it turns out to be too wide you can always sell it. This subject has come up before, you should do a search for more info on this subject, hope that helps. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 106 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 106 | What is the measurement of the 51 rear end compared to the 79? What are the differences in spring mount pad locations and e brake connections? Can you post a photo. The items above could help someone answer your question. I see you are in California. I suggest you call Tom at Foreign and Chevy Truck Salvage on 5th street in Santa Ana, CA. Tom really knows old and new Chevy truck rear ends and transmissions and could probably answer your question over the phone. Tom also does installation and conversion work, if you are nearby. He has done good work for me on a couple of AD trucks.

Take it with you and you & compare it to the donor rear end, you will see right away how close you are to the original. Takes out a lot of guesswork as far as width. This may help. Good luck. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 17 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 17 | ill buy it from you if is reasonably cheap...oh, you in california , well maybe not but get it and keep it...kev | | | | | Joined: Oct 2004 Posts: 1,780 Master Gabster | | Master Gabster Joined: Oct 2004 Posts: 1,780 | Check out this chart they measure from the tire mounting surface instead of the backing plate. Speedway has them cheap in there catolog. Just get out your tape mesure and go to town. Measure center to center on your springs. Then Wheel mounting surface to WMS. Then WMS to center of spring hanger. if the measure from WMS to center spring is to short on your new RR don't use it. The tires mite rub. In this case a little more is better. I don't know if you can hook a newer drive line to the older type tranny. Ask around if that is what you propose. | | |
