For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Nov 2011 Posts: 141 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2011 Posts: 141 | Okay I went ahead and bought a replacement frame for the windshield. I would have liked to keep the original but it will take quite a bit of work to make it right. So I will use the one I bought till I can find a original or fix the one that i Have. Here are my q's
Does the weather stripping go around all four sides of the glass? This is the rubber that fits between the frame and the glass. You wrap it around the glass before you slide it it the frame. Mine was almost non existent, and I'm not sure it was correct in the first place. It was my understanding that the divider bar with the rubber seal makes the weather seal in the center of the windshield, but if I am wrong please tell me.
Also, after reading some of the posts here I am under the impression that my new frame wont fit??? Is this even possible? I bought a frame from the filling station and it came with the braces that go in the frame. The tech tip here said the one he bought needed to be bent?? Is this still the case??
When I put the new windshield frame rubber on can I freeze it to make it smaller so it will go on easier? I bought the one piece. Any suggestions before I put it all together?
Thanks, Dan
Is there a trick I need to know before I do this?

The outside seal I bought from Steele Rubber Products which I think is way superior to any others. I tried to install my windshield and had it all together and overtightened the divider screws and cracked both sides. I took the frame to a glass company and had them cut new ones and install. I did install the outer rubber using Dawn dish soap. My frame was new as well with no fit problems. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2011 Posts: 141 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2011 Posts: 141 | Thanks! Thats good news. I only bought enough for three sides each.
I won't over tighten the screws!!!!!
Do you know if you are supposed to make vee cuts at the corners so it doesn't wrinkle? Is there a way to put the tape on that I need to learn?

I had the glass cut locally, and asked the guy about the glass setting tape. He said that is an antiquated product that is notorious for allowing water to seep in, and that he recommends using a modern urethane adhesive like they use on newer cars. Has anyone tried this on a stovebolt windshield frame? | | | | | Joined: May 2004 Posts: 1,312 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2004 Posts: 1,312 | I had an auto glass shop set mine with polyeurethane. Did a great job / cost $ 60.00 As to 46GMCdans's question about the fit of the windshield frame, I got lucky in that the bars that came with my new frame were bent the correct angle so it fits pretty tight. With this type of frame, complete sealing is pretty tough. I have a small gap on the lower right corner. You just can't crank it in tight enough. I saw a truck at a show where the Owner had installed " cam-type " brackets on the inside post to pull everything tight - looked OK / worked great. Bought it at NAPA for about $15, and it comes in a tube like caulking. It was easier to apply than I anticipated, and I think it did a real fine job. I would highly recommend it over glass setting tape. If anyone else wants to try it, I'd be happy to share exactly what I did. | | |
