I removed the bolts through the wood on the hoizontal peice, and the two bolts that connect the vertical peices to the sides of the bed, but they're still stuck to the sides of the bed, are they welded on? Thanks!

Mine aren't bad enough to warrant replacing them but they could do with a tidy up. BC52 Do you have any more info on these?

I have used the covers as a temporary cosmetic-measure. They look fine - better than the rusted/pitted side strip pieces.
We removed the strips during metal clean-up because they were severely rusted. They will be replaced with "plug-welded" stainless-steel strips (maybe next summer).

Otherwise the rust and remaining grit will bleed through the paint and as we know (according to Neil Young): "rust never sleeps."
All depends on how fussy you are.
