I have a couple of Carter glass bowl fuel filters,(the ones that say "CARbureTER" on them, but I don't know where to get gaskets and/or filter elements for them. The one has the original type porous ceramic looking stuff in it, the other has a lot of air inside, they both need gaskets . Any Ideas?

Gaskets can be cut from Buna-N that's avalable from McMaster Carr in one foot square sheets.
As fur as the elements go you might post a picture of the filter and luck out. Some times guys have some new old stuff gathering dust on a shelf in the garage.

I like those red top Carter fuel filters. Don't know if it's the same as a Moraine Durex filter gasket:
diameter = 2-1/8"
inner opening = 15/16".

If they are the same, I can send you a pattern for a Durex filter gasket. Send me a PM with your email address.

Carter filters are often on e-bay. You might find an element there.

If the bowl leaks, here is how fixed my leaking Durex filter body.

BTW - see this 1959 Cadallac Serviceman bulletin about reusing old cork filter gaskets -- lower right corner. It's true. My cork fuel filter gasket will shrivel up like a corn flake when I remove it and it dries out. Must cut a new one.

Filter elements with a gasket are available from Napa & Carquest. The element is a paper cartridge type.

So that we can avoid the future rants about the "pimply faced kids behind the counter who can't even read a parts catalog that often are hidden or have be removed . . . "

Does anyone have a link to an on-line catalog or does anyone have a brand of gasket/filter and a part number and or a cross reference (for Durex filters)?

Might be good to start with the original GM parts numbers. All were Group 3.890.

Can't guarentee, but I believe that this info is mostly correct ...

The 1940-1949 Durex filter had a wingnut and screw through the glass filter bowl. The glass bowl of the 1950+ Durex filter was secured by a wire bale. I believe that the bowl on the 1953+ filter was a little shallower that the 1950-1952 filter because the deeper bowl did not fit on a '53 Powerglide car. GM changed to AC filters in 1956.

The bowl and gasket for the '40-'49 Durex filter, with the wing nut screw through the bowl, is larger diameter than the '50-54+filter. '50-'54 gasket is 2-7/64" diam. I cut the gasket for my Durex 2-1/8" - it is a snug fit.

Wash the ceramic element you have in vinegar.

Gaskets can be made from a variety of materials. We generally use cork for the fuel filter gaskets due to the thickness required. Very difficult to cut the desired thickness in some of the other materials.

As to elements; Carter produced many different ceramic elements, all that are very close in size. Trying to get the correct one is difficult. Too small an element will not seal. Too large an element will crack the bowl.
