Only a month ago, instead of purchasing a 6 volt battery, I opted for a 8 volt battery just because of the extra cranking power...Is it necessary to put a 2 volt drop resistor to protect the instruments ??? Thanks in advance...

You're headed for a heap of trouble. An 8V battery is a solution to a nonexistent problem.

If the 6 volt charging system you have now cannot keep a 6 volt battery fully charged there is no way it will ever keep an 8 volt battery fully charged. If you fix the 6 volt system it will work fine. Randy

I had no problem keeping the 6 volt battery charged, the charging system is fine...There is a mechanic locally, that suggested to go to an 8 volt battery for a little more cranking power, I listened, thus the 8 volt battery...I am going to replace battery with 6 volt again...Thanks Jerry

That's rough on points, lights, and possibly the gas gauge. It's really impractical to put enough voltage-dropping stuff in place to get the extra voltage only to the starter. We used to deal with the same thing back in the mid-50's at Dad's shop when there were a lot of 6V cars on the road, and a local battery maker started selling their version of an 8V setup.
