Hey I'm new to the forum. I have a 54 150. Just converted to 12v for winter driving. I know this has nothing to do with wiring.
When I fire the old girl up she will only run with the gas pedal flat to the floor. And at that only for a few seconds. I changed the condenser and added a alternator. Other than that, that's all I did in the engine bay. When it shuts down fuel spills out the overflow tube in the center of the carb. Could the carb be bad? The car ran great b4 the conversion

It sounds like you carb float is stuck.

When I put the float in. What way should the rear tab be facing? Up or down?

The float operates the needle valve, so it needs to be put in so that when the float is up, the valve is closed, and when the float is down, it is open. You could connect a piece of plastic tubing to the fuel inlet and blow through it to test if it is open or closed as you work the float.

In most carbs the tab pushes on the needle valve, so up. Just remember though, up is down when the carb top is upside down on the work bench!

Also you might want to let everyone know what type of carb it is, it will help with the diagnosis. It does sound like the needle valve is not closing though. Is there pooled gasoline on the floor of the intake?

Check the float to make sure it is not full of gas. If it is in correctly YOU must have dirt in the needle & seat.
