They're equal parts of wishful thinking and outright lies. Like P.T. Barnum was fond of saying, "There's a sucker born every minute!" Keep the engine well-tuned and the spark plugs clean and gapped right, and any plug will give good gas mileage.

Ive been a auto tech for 40 years and customers have had me install all of the "gimmick plugs" and no one got back to me about how much better they run and how much better the fuel economy is. I proved it to myself with my 2000 Toyota Tundra, on two 800 mi. identical round trips to Portland. One with orginal plugs and one with the E-3 plugs as mentioned above. Less than .1 mile per gallon difference, always driven at the legal limit and with the cruise on. The only advantage is that you will not have to change plugs very often.
The older I get, I only want to work on older rigs.

CAFE standards are tough and mileage bragging rights are always on the minds of the marketing people. if a simple spark plug change could really make a positive difference in MPG, you can bet they would be in new cars. even at $10 more per plug that's only $40-$60 on most cars and thats a drop in the bucket on a $20K-$30K ride...
