Hey gang, my 54 1/2 ton original differential rear cover gasket seeps a bit of fluid. Want to replace the gasket and seal and paint. Where can I get a gasket and what am I getting into from a fluid replacement standpoint? What and how much fluid would I need? Any other issues/concerns?

I ordered my gaskets from Obsolete Chevy Parts
They are 2 different gaskets. The thin one goes between the diff. and the housing and the thick one goes under the cover.
I haven't filled mine yet so someone else will have to tell you the fluid capacity.

On capacity and filling - it seems that I put less than a quart in mine. Fill until level with the bottom of the filler hole.

On concerns - Be sure not to drop the cover on your foot! I can tell you from experience that it's a heavy sucker.

That gasket should be available through any parts
store. Use 80/90 gear lube GL5. It should take
almost 2 quarts. It is available in 1 qusrt bottles. I like to glue the gasket to the cover
& put a thin layer of RTV on the other side. smile

Yes it should be available from any parts store but I couldn't find it locally. My NAPA man ordered 2 different ones that look like it in the book but no match. So I ended up paying double with "shipping and handling".

Hi, Bruce
The last two times I pulled a cover, I took the side of a box (such as cerial or cookies) and cut a gasket using non-hardening gasket sealer on both sides. Lay your cover down and draw it out. Cut it out and use a notebook paper hole punch for the bolt holes. This way, you know your have the right one and it won't cost you eight bucks or so. Almost two quarts of dope is right. Get the bottles with the long snout for easy installation.
