Want to replace the gasket and seal and paint. Where can I get a gasket and what am I getting into from a fluid replacement standpoint? What and how much fluid would I need? Any other issues/concerns?

The thin one goes between the diff. and the housing and the thick one goes under the cover. Fill until level with the bottom of the filler hole.
On concerns - Be sure not to drop the cover on your foot! I can tell you from experience that it's a heavy sucker. | | |

Use 80/90 gear lube GL5. It should take almost 2 quarts. It is available in 1 qusrt bottles. I like to glue the gasket to the cover & put a thin layer of RTV on the other side.

The last two times I pulled a cover, I took the side of a box (such as cerial or cookies) and cut a gasket using non-hardening gasket sealer on both sides. Lay your cover down and draw it out. Cut it out and use a notebook paper hole punch for the bolt holes. This way, you know your have the right one and it won't cost you eight bucks or so. Almost two quarts of dope is right. Get the bottles with the long snout for easy installation.
