The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop "Timing Cover Again"

I searched, I know I saw it once before, but now can't find it. I plan to drill and tap, so as to put bolts through the front of the timimg cover. I saw someware(once), what size hole to drill, and size of bolt to tap for. I'm thinking that I need to drill & tap for a 3/8 fine thread bolt, (thinking becouse the original 5/16 bolts were fine thread. Does this sound right? Will the same size (20/64) drill, used to drill the cap to tap, be large enough to drill through the cover, and allow the bolts to slide through to the cap where they will screw in? Thanks.

Here\'s how I did it.

The existing holes in the bearing cap will tap as they are. I drilled my outer holes to 3/8" but it will line up easier if you go a tad larger.

Great tip Cletis!!! One thing you might want to do before installing the 3/8" lower timing cover bolts is to grind down the height of the head....it will make it easier to drop the 7/16" driver's side motor mount bolt in from the top, especially if you've got the balancer installed and the engine is in the truck.
