For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Oct 2011 Posts: 117 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2011 Posts: 117 | My 65 has a 283 with a powerglide trans. The transmission is leaking bad. It looks like the pan is leaking and there is a leak coming from the dust cover that covers the flywheel. I am building the truck to sell I thought about putting a standard in it. Which would sell better an auto or standard? Also how hard are the leaks to fix? | | | | | Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 1,552 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 1,552 | Pull the transmission and reseal it and install a new pan gasket. For the cost of parts & labor, to convert from an automatic to a manual (done properly & workmanlike), you can rebuild the factory-correct Powerglide and retain the originality of the truck.
I have converted several from manual to automatic, at the truck owner's request, but never had a request to convert a factory automatic to a manual. When doing so, the cross member, column, shift method & drive shaft must be changed...if the conversion is done to maintain the equity or originality of the truck. There were far fewer automatics put in these trucks, as compared to 3-speed and 4-speed manual transmissions, so finding an original, that hasn't been molested, with the original 2-speed Powerglide automatic, is hard to find. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 426 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 426 | I agree with Tony, Id leave the auto in. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | I believe the auto trans will have better resale value. Myself I prefer a manual trans but its amazing how many people out there can't drive one. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. I checked prices on gaskets for the powerglide and they were not to bad. Both my trucks I drive are four speeds and I really like them. If I was going to keep the truck I would go with a standard. Thanks for the replys | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,742 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,742 | You've got the late-model Powerglide with the aluminum case, which, other than being short one gear, is a pretty good transmission. They have been highly modified for drag race and circle track use and worked very well in both applications.
It's not the ideal truck transmission, but for a weekend cruiser or a daily driver, I think it would be wise to leave it "as is". Jerry
