I have a 1949 Chevy P/U how do I tell if it a early or late model. It doesn't have a plate on the door sill. I do have the numbers off of the engine How can I tell when it was built

Thanks

Bennie,

Inside the cab, do you have a roof bow to hold up the cardboard? Does it screw in or does it float.

Here is a list of some differences between early 1949 and late 1949.

Here is a description of some of the differences that took place in 1949.

Post the numbers you have from the engine. Of course, the engine might not be the original one.

It's hard to tell unless your title shows a number. I bought mine in MO. and the title had the ID number on it. With the number you can check and see where and when it was manufactured.
You can't be certain with the motor number as the it might be a replacement of the original. I'm not sure the motor number would ID the truck anyway.

The numbers stamped on the engine block in back of the distributor is GBA325874. in front of the distributor on the block is GM 48 with a circle around it below that is 385253 below that is 20. These numbers are not stamped in the block but look to be cast in the block

Thanks

http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/chevyresto/4952.htm

GBA325874 engine serial number stamped into the block
GBA = 1949

385253 block casting code
any chance you dropped a digit and it is 3835253 (1949 216 truck block)

http://1954advance-design.com/Stovebolt-engine/casting-numbers.html

Here are locations of head and block date casting-codes.

None of the above information will definitively tell you if you have an early 1949 cab or a late 1949 cab.

Have you looked for any of the distinguishing characteristics at the links in my earlier post?

Wasn't this when the glove box changed too?(metal trim ring at opening) Or was that between '49 and '50. Or am I crazy?
