Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Oct 2011 Posts: 112 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2011 Posts: 112 | I pulled my drive shaft to replace the differential u-joint. That part went great! Now that I tried to slide the shaft back into the tranny, it stops short about 5/8 of an inch and will not slide all the way in. Any ideas why? | | | | | Joined: Aug 2004 Posts: 1,418 ODSS Lawman | | ODSS Lawman Joined: Aug 2004 Posts: 1,418 | Are the shafts on the new and old u-joint the same length? If the newer one is longer it would explain why it seems like its not in all the way.

I saw his signature shows a 69 model so it will be open driveshaft. If you turn the driveshaft 180 degrees, does the front yoke go in any further? It came out, you have to assume that the same parts would go back together the same way. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2011 Posts: 112 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2011 Posts: 112 | Greg_H, I didn't rotate the shaft fully 180° after the first try, but I did rotate it a few degrees, then a few more. Each time I got the same result. The shaft will stop with a thud with about 5/8 of an inch to go..so neither the hanger bearing nor the rear u-joint will line up where they need to be. Is there any possibility that the splines have only one position that will mate properly with the transmission? | | | | | Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 1,299 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 1,299 | I got nothing here. I can't say that I have ever seen one that was one way only but that doesn't mean much. Any chance that a needle fell into the end of the driveshaft front yoke? | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,771 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,771 | Pull the shaft back out and shine a light into the slip yoke. There's almost got to be something in the yoke that is keeping it from sliding all the way into position. Jerry

The hanger bearing was catching on the botton part of the frame thingie it passes through. Lesson learned! | | |
