This engine has 167000 miles on it. It is an original 1966 283ci V8 that came with the Suburban. When last driven in the late 70's to early 80's the owner kept cardboard handy to prevent staining driveways. When towing it to my house, it leaked.

Here are some pix:

What's the best course of action? Valve cover and oil pan gaskets? I would like to reduce the leakage quite a bit without a complete overhaul. I'm hoping for some interim fixes to get it running and not dumping all the oil before I leave the driveway. frown

If you can get the damper off, maybe replace the front cover gasket and oil seal. If there is a groove on the damper seal surface, get a sleeve to repair it.
The rear main seal can be replaced in the truck, but it's a job. If it's not too wet, leave it for now.

Current fleet (subject to change w/o notice)
\'49 GMC 3/4-Ton , 60 Austin Healey Frog-eye Sprite (some assembly required), 2011 Dodge Avenger, 2015 Jeep Cherokee. No, they don't all run.
My other ride is a (B737)no, (B767)no, A320.... Update... was Embraer E190, now Boeing B787.

Knowledge is a wonderful thing, but ignorance means you don't know you can't do something.

you have to start with a total cleaning so you can see anything, but the only course of action for a 283 with 167 thou on it is a rebuild, much of that external sludge is from blowby out the road draft and oil fill cap - even doing a complete gasket kit will require taking the engine out and finding a host of problems when you take it apart enough to replace all the gaskets, the rear main is leaking for one
