Just picked up a gravity fed hvlp gun at a yard sale, and was fooling around with it. On the handle it says 30 p.s.i at the inlet, it really doesn,t want to spray at that low of pressure.When I turn on the gun the pressure drops to about 15 or 20 psi, maybe I,m wrong but I feel like the pressure should be about 25-30 when the gun is on.The gauge is srewed in to the handle, anyway I,m not sure?

The 30psi is the spraying pressure, not the inlet pressure. So you are correct - it does want to spray at 25-30! Adjsut the PSI with air moving through the gun.

If it's been used some (or more..) you'll want to try and find a rebuild kit. Lower end guns loose their ability to atomize well after some time.

cap pressure and spray pressure are two dif things , think of it as a HP number you have at the tires vrs a fly wheel HP number

I hate hvlp guns myself. But learned old school. I have always found that they cause runs really fast unless you have a controlled heated booth. Kind of hard to spray a good glass coat only to find it sagged all over. They were a real headache to me. I would lay a light coat then the second coat 30 minutes later only to find out it had sagged in drying.If you learn on hvlp that would be a good thing. Now I am wondering about the water based paint they are using...

HVLP guns are fine if you get the spray pattern just right. Many HVLP guns want 10psi at the cap usually achieved with 30 psi at the end of the hose.

Gotta keep that gun moving along....
