In American motors cars they were called "Flashaway", in Oldsmobiles they were called "Jetaway", and in Pontiacs they were called "Strato-Flight", I can't find any shift adjustment spec's at the moment, but I will look for some tomorrow | | | | | Joined: Oct 2011 Posts: 172 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2011 Posts: 172 | just a ,bump, on this

that may help i,ll have to look at my trans and try the positions as i,v also been told that i have a 4speed auto without a park position and that you have to place it in reverse with the motor stopped to engage park ???? do quite understand that bit myself but the truck is nearly 100 miles away at the mo so i,ll check when i go over to her. or when i get her home

Unfortunately 1955-56 was the time of changes in the transmissions in cars, somewhere in 1956 most cars started being equipped with the "Dual Coupling Hydramatic". In Canada (where I'm from), our trucks never changed from using the "Dual Range Hydramatic", they used it right up to 1962. In my mind a "Dual Range Hydramatic" is a far superior transmission to the "Dual Coupling Hydramatic". It would help to know if this running gear came from a car or a truck (American GMCs used Pontiac V8s from the 1955 2nd or "B" series in their V8 equipped trucks up to the 500 series), so a little detective work on your part is required to verify which transmission is in your truck, hope that helps. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,742 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,742 | The HydraMatic transmission that was original-equipment in GMC trucks with the Pontiac V-8 had a large rectangular sheet metal side cover with the manual shift linkage going through it, along with a spring-loaded throttle position lever. It does not have a "Park" position at the top of the quadrant. The transmission used in the 56-up Pontiac, Cadillac, and Oldsmobile passenger cars was known as a "Controlled-Coupling Hydramatic". Depending on the specific carline, various names were used in advertising copy. This transmission had the shift quadrant which included a designated "Park" position above Neutral. The large sheet metal side cover was not present on that unit, and I believe it had an aluminum housing, not cast iron. It was not used in any truck application that I'm aware of. Jerry

so it sounds like it came from a car ,,
also the truck has what i beleive is a 12 bolt rear end with a removeble diff and a rear cover what we in the uk call a ,banjo, axle
