I have a 1955 1st series chevy 1/2 ton. While trying to resolve a stalling issue, I am ready to replace the gas tank. When looking at the assembly manual for my truck, it looks like the fuel outlet is through the sending unit and out the top of the tank. My tank has the fuel line exiting through the bottom of the tank. From underneath the truck there is a rubber elbow coming from the cab which I think should have been the fuel line that is not used. There is a valve at the bottom of the tank with the line coming off that. How should I pipe the new tank?

It should be piped through the sending unit.

Thank You. That is what I thought. I guess I will be buying a new sending unit also.

Took out my gas tank today. The tank is not in bad shape. I am having it cleaned at a radiator shop. Should I eliminate the petcock on the bottom now that my new sending unit has the gas line on the top?
Thanks

When I replaced the sending unit on my '50, I just capped the "new" outlet in the sending unit, and still use the bottom outlet.

If the tank is clean, I can't see it mattering.

The only down side to the bottom outlet, is that if your fuel line, or hose, or pump break or rupture, all the fuel in the tank will drain. If you are working on the fuel pump or lines, you want to make sure your shut-off actually works. Ask me how I know this! Hahahaha

Anyone know how to remove the saddle that holds the tank inside the cab. The radiator shop told me the tank was in bad shape and needed to be relined. Instead I bought a Spectra tank from them it was cheaper than repairing my tank.
When I removed the tank there was a small rust hole under the tank. I cut out the affected area but it brought me right up to the saddle that holds the tank. I will be difficult for me to get in there and weld in my panel without removing the saddle. The saddle is not bolted in and wont budge. Are there spotwelds there? if so where?
Thanks

Can you post a photo of your "saddle" area? I have a 54 cab stripped and primed - I'll post photos of the area you are interested in.

I would leave the petcock. Then you can use it as a drain just like you would the petcock on a radiator.

In cleaning out the rusted area I came very close to what I am calling the saddle. Where the strap attaches. It appears to be welded in. I am trying to decide if I should remove it and put it back or leave it in place.
Thanks

Thanks for the pictures. You floor looks much nicer than mine will be. Will you be plugging the circular hole? In cleaning the damaged area I had to cut out a 2" by 4" section on the back of the cab also. I hope to weld in patches this week so I can put the tank back and try to drive this truck a little before winter really sets in.
BTW I notice you are in Castleton. We just drove by there last weekend to visit our son in Troy.

Troy,

I'll have to look at my gas tank before I decide if that hole should/can be covered. If the 54 tank has a drain through that hole, I'll use this type of floor seal.

My trucks will soon be in hibernation; but, if you visit your son next spring, send me a PM if you have the time for a brief stop/visit.

The hole I am sealing is not the round hole, it is a rusted section that looked tiny but grew to about 4 inch square when I started sanding. I bought a rubber plug for the circular hole since that is where the drain plug was.
Next time I go up that way I'll let you know.
