I have a 1965 Chevy P/U with a 230 engine & 3 speed Std. Would like some info as to the best sounding muffler for this truck....Thanks in advance....Have your self a Great Day.

You will never have areal cool sound from a
staight 6. Probably a real long glass pack
would sound best.

Depends on what type sound you're looking for. If you're looking for a loud "rap" on acceleration, and "popping" on deceleration then classic glasspacks would be the way to go. If you're looking for a deep tone, sorta "v8-ish" then I'd say go with a two or three chamber flowmaster. I have one on my 66 shortbed stepside with a 292 straight six. Everybody thinks it's a v8.

If you go Flowmaster then go with the single in/dual out muffler. Probably want the dual 2 inch outlets. It's an easy fit into your stock exhaust.

Flows are awesome.

Dynamax Ultra-flows are pretty good too, I guess, but thats on Lightnings and Mustangs. Not sure about them on a straight 6.

I had a 24" Cherry Bomb behind my 216.....too loud for someone who leaves at 0530....It had to come off.

Maybe a 30 would have worked better...

Anyone that wants the sound of a V8 should get one. The straight six has a nice disguishable sound. I like my Smithy's. They are metal and just keep sounding better as they age.

Well I wanted that sound, got it, and will not put a v8 in my truck until I want one. QED!

flowers9: I'm running flowmaster 40's on my 235 with a split manifold and I think they sound great! At an idle and low speeds people think it's a V8 till I pop the hood and they can't belive it's a Inline. It still will always have the telltail "rap, rap" that says inline at speed though. A buddy that was behind me one day told me "he loved that sound, it sounds like a bunch of [censored] of bumble bee's!!"

I recently added cutouts right in front of the mufflers as I'm gonna be doing some nostalgia drag races and that sounds even better even though it's really loud, what do I care though I'll be wearing a helmet anyway.

I'll have to agree with KCMongo on this one. I run Fenton headers into a collector that goes into one 2 1/2 with one Flowmaster 40. It sounds bitchin'. It sounds completely different than if you had dual exhaust. A real throaty sound. Nobody knows it's a 6 until I pop the hood. The guy that built the exhaust for me used to build them for the inline Novas, back in the day.

Sounds(no pun) like you're more in agreement with ftyler. He has the same setup that you have. Two tubes into only one larger muffler.
I'm running two very quiet stock type oval mufflers, but I still have a little bit of that crappy rappy sound at the top of the gears when I'm on it. I have been thinking about putting a crossover just past the header collectors. I wonder if a crossover just ahead of the mufflers would have the same effect as your single muffler.

I'd advise anyone building an inline 6 for the street who wants dual exhaust pipes - and as about a deep and aggressive a sound as an inline 6 can produce - to go with a single inlet/dual outlet muffler. That way there are no crossover pipes (and crossover pipe location issues) to worry about.

The exhaust "pulses" are blended optimally and the muffler will do all the hard work. And out of the back it looks the same as if you had 2 mufflers. Only sounds better (my opinion - )

A crossover on mine would not be very hard nor would it amount to much. My exhaust goes straight back from the collectors, side-by-side. The mufflers are mounted vertically, side-by-side in front of the axle. Both tail pipes go over the axle and out the side, behind the rear tire just like the original single.

I was talking to a guy this last weekend and he said he used to connect the 2 Fentons using the threaded bung on each that normally is used for intake manifold heat. 1st time I heard that one.

I'm still contemplating the 2-in 2-out muffler.

Allright, I gotta get in on this. I've not had a bunch of V8's in my life but, I did have a '70 Dodge Charger 500 with a 383 Magnum when I was in high school and a '73 Z28 with a WAY BUILT 350. Both those cars sounded pretty mean but, neither had the COOL! sound of my 292 with long tube headers, glasspacks and dual as-straight-out-the-back-as-I-could-weld-it-exhaust. Don't know what it is about the setup, maybe the galvanized fence posts I used, but man, I just can't help myself from getting on the gas and revving her up. I get a smile everytime. Definitely gonna have to disagree on the no cool sounds outta a straight six. I'm getting ready to run the same setup in my straight six Pontiac. I like the glasspacks by golly. Even if they've lost their sound in a couple years, I'll just weld some new ones in for $36. Flowmaster is too high tech for me. But then I also use Royal Crown hair jelly instead of that fancy stuff!
