I have a 1953 3600, but the 216 ci engine is stamped with a 1952 code.

I posted this once before, and some of the experienced bolters said it was not uncommon to have "leftover" engines installed in current models. Maybe so.

Anyway, what color should the motor be? Would 52 vs. 53 matter? The PO painted it blue, which is OK with me, but I thought that the "Thriftmaster" was gray.

Yes, it was not uncommon for a block/head cast near the end of an earlier year being used in the next year.

What is the engine serial number (or engine ID) pressed into the block in the ledge to the rear of where the distributor goes into the block?

No 216 engines were painted blue. The Filling Station supposedly has the darker gray engine color that some people say was used on all 216 engines and on 235 truck engines prior to 1954 (some say that same color was also used on 235 truck engines from 1954 onwards).

The true shade of gray for all 235 truck engine colors (53 and earlier and 54 and later) can be argued as much (and as fruitlessly) as arguing which Christian religion is the one true Christian religion (or, which Muslim religion is the one true Muslim religion).

The block is stamped AKCA793894. I understand that is 3600 engine from the Flint MI factory. The truck itself is J53B027999. I understand that is a 1953 3/4 ton made in Baltimore. I wasn't sure where to look for the other number you mentioned.

My block was, and still is in some spots, painted blue. Tho mine is not the original '51 216 as far as I can tell. When I started repainting parts of it as I have panels off I've been using Rust-Oleum New Ford Gray 500*F engine enamel.
