It has the original 12 bolt rearend that the spiders just locked up on him. Long story short, he had a grinding in the right rear. When I pulled the wheel off the backing plate was distorted due to the wheel bearing coming unglued and the axle shaft moving up a good 1/4". When I pulled the cover the fluid oozed out like tar. The rest of the bearings don't have any slop but the spiders are siezed to the center pin. I can only drive it out about a 1/2" either way before my drift starts sinking into the pin! (First, I should state the obvious: I did remove the retaining bolt! ) I've tried heat, PB Blaster and a BFH. I can see where the gears have scored the pin. Does anyone know what year spider gears are compatable with this rearend? He's kinda low on funds right now so we want to go junkyard surfing until he is able to upgrade. I've searched all the sites I know and have only come up with Classic Parts as offering the pin but not the gears. The truck doesn't see much use, but he wants to be able to hit the big cruise at the end of the month. Thanks in advance........

Big Chevy: You're right, my '75 has a 10 bolt.
I was hoping to be able to just replace the entire chunk, buuuuuut... I even broke out the BIGGER BFH today to no avail. There must be a major burr or something on the shaft. I drove the pin out enough to free the washer on one of the gears, but now it's stuck like it was welded. I've been trying to drive the pin back and forth hoping to break past the burr or whatever it is, but now I have it jammed and have to wait till morning to break out the die grinder because I mushroomed the top of the pin. My uncle found a place locally that sells the replacement spiders and pin for $99. At this point I'm about to take the blue tipped wrench to it and say the heck with it and have him buy the replacement kit. Although, his truck does look darn good in my driveway, I'd like him to be able to drive it soon.
Has anyone had a gear set sieze up like this on them before? I was just wondering if this a fluke or is this common. I've had them crumble and spit teeth out through the cover before, but never seen one sieze up like this.
Thanks again..... | | |

I'm sure my neighbors appreciated the banging and die grinder . We finally had to have one person hold the drift with channel locks so the other one could use both hands on the hammer. We got the pin out to where it just about touched the case, spun it around, hacked the pin with a cut off wheel, and drove it back down into the spiders and rotated the carrier and drove it back out the 'window' in the carrier. Man,that was too much like work! This one has the 30 spline axles, so hopefully they will be easier to come across. We found all of the passenger side axle bearings along with the race half way down the axle tube and the driver side spit out one bearing and was on its way out too. Thanks so much for all the help, as always that's why this is the best site around! I've been so busy trying to get my wagon ready for Woodward Dream Cruise and haven't stopped in here much lately. Thanks alot, Scott
