old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 4 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 4 | I just bought a 55 2nd series. Was told it was a 283 out of a mid 60's truck.
I need help decoding this and found no luck with the heads. The number on the block is T1112GF
The number on the heads is X6889868
I need to tune it up and replace some stuff but I don't know what to look for.

The GF code was used on three V8s a 1955 265, a 1957 283, and a 1965 283, so if your block has side mount bosses cast into it then it's the 1965 283. If it doesn't have side mount bosses then it could be either a 265 or a 283, a casting number (raised) from the block may help to pin it down, hope that helps. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 1,847 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 1,847 | frankenstein, thats funny, with halloween being just around the corner and all.... | | | | | Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 283 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 283 | And a 55 265 wouldn't have a boss on the block to mount an oil filter. They used a bracket mounted partial flow filter bolted on the intake manifold.

I'm leaning to thinking this is a 65' 283. The intake # referenced a 64-65 283, which lines up with what the guy said. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,740 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,740 | Beginning with 1958 passenger cars, there were three bolt holes on each side of the 283 block beside the #3 and #4 cylinders, for mid-engine motor mounts. At the same time, the mounts at the bellhousing and the front of the engine were eliminated and a mount was added at the rear of the transmission. If your block has those three holes and a place to attach the oil filter at the driver's side rear of the block, it's the mid-60's 283 that the engine number suffix indicates. A 1955 265 with that letter code won't have an oil filter mount or side-mount bolt holes, and the early 283 won't have holes for side motor mounts.
Truck engines kept the 4-point motor mounts at the front of the engine and the bellhousing through the early 1960's, even if the block has holes for center mounts. Jerry
Edit: Drop me a Private Message with a phone number or an email address, and I'll be glad to look at the engine and try to help identify it. My farm is actually about 60 miles south of Nashville, but I'm up that way frequently. Jerry
