You should be able to make it work. If you dont have current going to the coil after aborting the factory system you can hook the wire to a circuit that is hot when the ign. is running. The choke should go shut when cold. To test the choke Hook a jumper wire to the choke coil & a hot wire The choke should gradually open up.
If you are running the original carb with out the electronics it will not get good gas mieage.

The electric part of the choke is designed to be sure the choke valve opens fully within one minute if the temperature is above 70 degrees F., and within 3 minutes below that. It's a very simple oil pressure controlled circuit, and disabling it makes no sense at all. Installing an automatic choke cover without the heater strip doesn't work because there's no hot air system built into the carburetor to provide the heat necessary to make it release properly.

Without the electronics and the emission stuff it won't run quite right and it won't be as economical on fuel.
