I can buy a new set of plugs and in a week or so 1 or 2 will go bad. The plugs are running really rich in color. do you think it maybe the float setting in the carb,making it fowl plugs.Any help please also it's a 235 chevy. | | |

If you are driving it regular & they are getting black you are running too rich. If it,s all slow & idleing, moveing around the shop you have to clean them occasionally. The extended tip plugs work the best. Like AC R46s. I bought some Champion plugs a while back & they broke real easilly & there was nothing in side the insulator, Just space. I keep a spark plug sand blaster in the shop & clean the plugs on the trucks we are working on when nessesary. They are available from the discount tool shops for $20-25.

I take it you have a Roch. model B carb. You will need to take the top off the carb. & check the float level. Make shure the power valve is working & the vacuum passage in the base of the carb has passage to the intake manifold. The ignition & timing need to be right also. The size of the main jet is stamped on the jet. Make a note of it. There has been a lot of posts on this in this websight. You may want to do a search for some more info.

If the engine is worn out, poor compression and burnt leaking valves, it will have a tough time burning even a proper mixture of air/fuel. If the sooty material on the plugs is anything but dry black soot, you have oil control problems which will also foul plugs.

The compression is 100lbs across all six,the timing I havent't done yet 6 volt everything else has been replaced coil ,wires,points it maybe be the vacuum under the carb is plugged. doug | | |

My 1950 chevy has been running rich and fowling plugs for awhile now, and after posting my problem on this site (wrenchbender ret) diagnosed the problem. I had covered the vacuum port under my carb which was making my plugs foul out.,good for me bad for the local NAPA PARTS store. | | |
