I have begun my search for the motor to put on my wishlist for the 65 stepside, It is set up now with a 350, and t15 4 speed stick. I have been thinking 383 stroker would be great (looking to pass anything but a gas station) I think I can get a 400hp crate set up for around 6k any thoughts/ideas here ..thrany is good for about 500hp or so the shop I got it from says...

Another approach is a 377. That's a 400 small block bored .030", with a 350 crankshaft. It's got better RPM capability than the long stroke 383, and with 6" connecting rods installed, it gets pretty close to the ideal 2:1 rod:stroke ratio that maximizes the thrust on the piston in the upper half of the piston travel. I built several dirt track engines on that setup and won a lot of races with them.

Its been a while since I thought about a 377. Jerry is spot on. We ran them in our dirt late model years ago and always had great luck and could put a hurting on the guys with the high dollar 406's. We also had a 364 (stroked 350) that would run good.
