I cant find a clear pic in the books on how to orientate to timing marks on the 1956 235 cam gear and crank gear. Are they to be placed directly next to each other or furthest apart. I didnt take apart this engine so I'm in the dark on this one.
Thanks

Get a shop manual , You line up the dot on the cam gear with the dot on the crank gear ,the crank gear dot is at a tooth and the dot on the cam gear is in between two teeth,if you're putting in engine together get a shop manual for that year truck and engine all the places like Clasic of America have them as reprints and they will help alot as you're building the engine and the truck. When building it's good just to leave it on the bench so it's handy.

Hello Rick,
x2 on the manual recommendation.
Here is a link to a Shop Manual for the second series '55 235ci. It should be the same as for your truck.

The timing marks align every two turns of the crankshaft. If you install the cam with the marks aligned with each other, the next turn of the crank will have them as far apart as possible. Always turn the engine twice to make sure you haven't made an alignment mistake on the tooth pattern.

Exception to the rule- - - - -I assembled a Ford 3000 tractor engine once, with a very complex timing gear set with about three idler gears for accessory drives. Everything was timed with punch marks. I rotated the engine twice, and a couple of the marks were out of time. Tear it down and reassemble- - - -four times! It turns out the idler gears were made with a "hunting" patern to equalize gear tooth wear, and the timing marks aligned again after 96 turns of the crankshaft!

Thanks for the feedback. I do have the shop manuals and I reference the web alot. There is just not an absolute clear pic of the timing marks and how they are orentated. Better to ask questions than to build a perfectly good paper weight.

Thanks again,
Rick..........
