Is this a bad starter solenoid?

Try a new switch on the starter.

Most likely it is the push button switch as Roy states. The truck has been converted to 12V. I had the starter rebuilt and noticed that the switch was sticking. I replaced the switch, but there still might be something there. I will pull it again and sleuth that out.
This is hopefully the last hurdle.

If wired correctly there should be a resistor bypass wire running from the small terminal on the starter switch to the positive terminal on the coil. If the truck runs in the start position but dies when you let up, it is not getting power from the ignition switch, just the bypass. This does not explain the starter run on problem, only the dying problem.

There should also be a spring on the mechanical linkage to help pull it back into position.
The linkage could be binding where it attaches to the bell housing.
And predave is right. Sounds like it is getting power through the bypass wire off the starter switch, but not the ignition switch. | | |
