I'm new to this site but it looks awesome , if this is not the right place to post this , please let me know . I just purchased a 55 chevy pickup 2nd series, the vin and engine #'s are not comming up on any web site i have searched (like 10 or more ).right now I really need to know if the engine is original ,so i can start working on it , It's a straight six with a single barrel carb and 3 speed manual . here is the # 04489I8F562.I'm guessing it's not the original engine , but everything else seems to be , and it is complete. thanks in advance for any help . 55redstove

Looks like the engine is most likely a '56 passenger engine, as I'm inclined to beleive that the "2" at the end of the code may actually be a "Z".

If you look here:
Chevy Sixes and go to page 2, you will see a rusty engine on the left and a blue one on the right. Yours is like the one on the right except in Canada it is most likely a 216. Notice the buldge between #1 and #2 plugs on the head. That is specific to your motor.

Was there a bulge in the upper middle of the 235/261 side cover all the way to 1962/63? Is that bulge needed after about 1958?

I am sorry, I mixed up your post with another one. Disregard my comment about buldges.

I had a similar issue with my 52, chevy 3100. In 52, the VIN was the number on the engine block....if you have the pink-slip, the vin on the pink, and the engine number should be the same...assuming they still used that number in 55.
