#78236 05/30/2007 1:29 PM | Joined: Aug 2006 Posts: 98 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Aug 2006 Posts: 98 | I've got two '60 trucks that I'm making into one good one.Was working on the rearend of one last nite and noticed that rearend is differant from the other one.Both are 1/2 tons.Can someone tell me what the differances are?Don't know if this helps but one has an overload spring running across the top of it.

I'm not sure exactly what year the Dana 44 was available, but it was an option that came with Positraction.
The center section of a Dana has a cover on the back only...the other style of rear end has a drop-out front center section, and a cover in the rear. It's more round, too.
If you have the choice, go with the Dana--it was used in everything from Studebakers to Mail jeeps to recent Jeep wagoneers, Ford trucks. and a ton of other vehicles. They're about the cheapest rear end to build, parts are readily available for them, they're strong, and you can get a good Posi unit and most any gear ratio you'd want.
