Hey guys, I need some help figuring out which carb I have vs. which one I should have. When I purchased my '59 38 with 235, the PO said he had installed a rebuilt carb and had installed an aftermarket breather (dinky little chrome thing) because he couldn't get the oil bath cleaner to fit the new carb. After finally getting around to checking it, I found the reason: The installed carb requires a breather with a 2 5/8" opening, while the oil bath breather has a 2 1/4" opening. Do I have the wrong carb. or did he give me the wrong oil bath breather? The carb has the following lettering and numbers on it: Front = Rochester Monojet made in USA. Top = 12. Side = 7043021 270 2 (and an illegible number). Does anyone have any ideas whats going on here?

monojet didn't come on a 59, a rodchester model B would be the carb.

I'd agree with Tommy, if this is the carb you have on the engine he's just put a later carb on your engine. http://www.carbkitsource.com/carbs/tech/Rochester/Monojet-index.html

The Monojet is a good carb. If you are not concernd about originality I would find a late 60's or 70's dry type air filter.

Thanks for the help everyone. Now I know this isn't the original carb. Wrenchbender, I plan to look for a more suitable air filter for the monojet, at least for short term use. Should I be concerned about the monojet being too large for the 235? My Apache drinks gas at an alarming rate.

Not at all to big, I am running two of them on a 250! You can lower the float a bit which will lean it out some of need be.

I ran one for a while on my 261, ran better than the B.

It should get better mileage then a model B. Like Joe says check the float level. Make sure the metering rod link did not fall out of the hole. This is a small curved rod that connects the throttle shaft to the metering rod holder. They are known to fall out on the early models & cause a rich mixture.

Thanks. I will open up the carb and check the float and metering rod holder.
