i have a 54 chevy with a 235. i have a holley 4 barrel 390 on it. it has been having problems starting up lately, like it is getting no gas. and it is idling really bad. it also has black smoke coming out of the tailpipes. so i took the air cleaner off, and the secondaries were leaking gas. i dont know what its called, but on top of the secondaries where the gas comes out, has a steady drip of gas going into the carb. i dont know how to fix this or what i should do. any help would be great, thanks

The first thing that comes to mind is the float level is too high, or possibly the float is bad. This will allow exess fuel in the bowl. You'll need to get the correct specs for that carb to reset the float to proper level.

If it has the external adjustable floats you can remove the needle & seats & clean them. Then adjust the float level till the fuel is at the bottom of the plug holes on the side. It could have a bad power valve also. If you are going to run one of those you need to read up on them so you can repair it yourself.

I agree on the junk on the seat, it doesn't take much to hold up the needle and seat on those Holley's. I used to keep a spare set in my glove box when I was foolishly running a Holley. I've learned to hate those darn carbs, they run different everytime you run them,

ok, so i found out, the float was way to high, gas poured out the hole when i opened it. so now i have lowered the level. i now want to re-tune the entire carb, such as idle, air-fuel mixture screws. what is the general setting for them? i know its something like tighten and then loosen 3.5 turns. but i dont know the exact amount of turns to go, and where all the adjustment screws are located. any help would be great! thanks again!

The idle mixture screws are on the side of the primary fuel bowl. One side is close to that fuel level plug. With the engine idleing turn each screw in slowly till the engine starts to slow down. Then back it out enough go back to the faster idle, about 1/4 turn. Then adjust your idle speed to about 600 rpm if you have a tach. or about 750 if is auto trans. If you don,t have a tach set it where it sounds good & is comfortable.
