Well...I have found another leak that wasn't evident until fluids were added.
First - The right rear wheel has a thick, black, greasy crud all over the back/bottom of the brake plate (forget what that is called). Something is leaking...can't tell if it's brake fluid or axle oil. No real distinctive smell.
Second - Seems I wasn't so good with the first re-sealing of the rear cover plate...it is now 'damp' with gear oil. No leaks in the drive way, but if you run your finger around the bottom half...lots of good red Lucas Oil on your finger.
SO...since the front brakes were in HORRIBLE shape...and I have an unknown leak....
I am thinking pulling the rear and just working it over. New cylinders, find leak, put new gaskets on rear cover and front pumpkin (it has slow leak too). Maybe consider different gears? (At least count them so I can check if original 5.14 like book says.)
Maybe even paint it all up before remounting to preserve it.
So...this sounds crazy to me...and it sounds like weeks worth of work for me. I have impact wrench, 2 ton jack, jack stands...and probable need to build a roller of some kind.
Anyone have ideas that would be effective but less crazy? (Getting to the shoes/cylinders on my 1 ton seem to require pulling out parts of axle anyway.)

You can do all the things you mentioned almost as easily in place as you can with it sitting 8' behind the truck if you were to remove it.
I see no advantage to removing the rear in your case.

You can pull the hubs off & service the brakes & axle seals. Getting the hubs/drums on correctly is crittical though. Are you shure the pinion seal is not leaking & running back to the rear cover.
