It might be something as simple as stuck/gummed up.
The light grease they were lubed with may have turned to gloop over the decades.
Especially as the truck was dormant for 25 years.
I know when I tore into mine the grease was like wax.
One of our Stovebolt stalwarts Denny Graham seems to know his way round these things,it might be worth sending him a PM.
If not,i'm sure he'll know someone who does.

ed | | | | | Joined: Jul 2001 Posts: 3,887 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Jul 2001 Posts: 3,887 | Ed - the speedo and odo are 2 different animals, the number wheels have tiny plastic tabs on the sides of the wheels that catch the wheel next to them and pull it along when turning past 0 - after many years if the shaft gets gummy, the force needed to turn the adjacent wheel can be enough to break off one of the tabs, usually toward the right so all the numbers stop turning to fix the odometer you'll need to get a set of replacement wheels from a donor unit, and follow the help in the tech tipsBill | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 | Gonna give you your answer here Ed, someone else may have the same problem one day: http://www.pbase.com/dennygraham/image/137816956/large http://www.pbase.com/dennygraham/image/137816993/large Unfortunately one of the gears is probably sheared of in the head. The needle cup is free floating and is driven by a magnet which is driven by a solid connection to the cable. The magnet is also directly connected thru gears to the odometer. Or as Bill mentioned it could be the drive tabs are broken. If the needle is giving you a reading then the cable is good and is driving the main shaft of the head. Look familiar John???? i am pretty sure it moved when i had my electric drill on it, but i will pull it again and try it. i hate to touch it because it is an original speedo w/17000 miles. truck title is clean w/14999 actual mi on last purchase in 1986!!

you are right. it probably doesn't matter what the odometer says these days on a 60 year old truck. i guess i'm just being anal about it because everything else works great. thanks for the replies though!!

Guess it's a throw back to my flying days when I didn't trust the fuel gauge but rather used the hours flown or what I still do on the motor cycle, hit the gas pump when I'm at 150 miles or else I'll be pushing it to the pump.
