Did you put a solenoid actuated starter in you car or stick with the foot-masher? I have seen folks mention that the ring gear was 'handed' but I don't know if this is true.

the starter was rebuilt - new drive on it .
i'm wondering if the guy who flipped the ring gear did not put it on squarely ?

I like to use new drives. It,s a one way clutch & if it slips inside it sounds like teeth grinding or sometimes just whirls & doesn,t turn the engine. Your switch on top the starter may be starting the motor too soon & not engauging the flywheel.

This allows you to move it slightly. Try moving it away from the linkage so that the drive gear is more fully engaged before the switch closes. | | |
