For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Feb 2010 Posts: 15 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Feb 2010 Posts: 15 | I just took the gas tank out of my truck and I was told to take it to a radiator guy in town to get it overhauled. The guy told me that he is going to clean/boil the tank and coat it on the inside. He said that it was going to cost $125. Being that this is my first restoration, does this sound right? Do I need to ask any additional questions? | | | | | Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 1,897 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 1,897 | That's what it cost me 4 years ago before new gas tanks were available. Seems like a fair price to me. Jim Carter does sell reproduction tanks, you may consider buying new. I can not vouch for the quality of the JC tanks, but the price seems pretty reasonable as well. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 64 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 64 | I put one of Carter's tanks in my '41 and everything fit correctly and it looked almost exactly like the original tank which was needing some attention. The only thing different was the tray the tank sits in on my early '41 had only one hole, as did the tank, and the new tank had two. So I took my hole saw and made the cooresponding hole on the other side. Gives me a drain plug as well as the regular shut off. I am pleased with the tank. The filler neck lined up with the hole well.

I wanted to keep the stock tank, if possible. Do I need to ask any additional questions? See if he offers a warranty. Those who don't follow the manufacturer's directions often find the coating peeling which creates blockage issues. I've had good luck with coatings but I'm pretty good at following instructions. Several here have not had as good luck.
