For some reason, my exhaust pipe keeps coming loose at the manifold. I had it double-nutted, and that lasted for almost two years, but coming home the other night, I noticed it was getting louder up front, and, sure enough, one stud was devoid of the nuts.

First off, does anyone know what size the exhaust pipe to manifild nuts are? Second, can a lock washer be used with these brass nuts to hold it more permanently?

the nuts should be 3/8 and yes use a lock washer that should stop the problem

You could also use a nylock type nut,it has an insert of nylone in the nut at the top so it will not loosen.

also check you're motor mts. might need to be replaced

and the hangers on the exhaust pipe there might be to much movment causing the nuts to come loose

Lock washer will cure it, nylock nuts will just melt the nylon out and not hold.

3/8" - 16 is what you want, or 3/8" -24 depending on the stud. Fine or course thread, pretty easy to see the difference. Also make sure the donut gasket is not smashed if it has one. My 250 uses a gasket and once they start to smash, it just keeps going and the pipe stays loose.

I thank you all for the input. It's a coarse thread. As for the donut, it appears to be in good shape. I have a few spares laying around, just in case.

Off to the hardware store.

Well, I went to NAPA and came out with a stud kit. In it were, besides two studs, were three tall brass nuts, three "normal looking" brass nuts, and two (?) steel lock washers. I put one lock washer and a tall nut on the side without nuts and it pulled up tight. I also tightened the existing nuts on the other side, and all seems good again. At some point I'll replace the nuts on the other stud.

Thanks again for your input.
