I was given the news today that it's definitely a goner. What should I do with it? If it's a small block V-8, it's probably junk because there are so many of them available. A full-pressure 235 might be worth saving if the block isn't cracked or some other major disaster is present. The most common cause of a locked-up engine is piston rings rusted to the cylinder walls or a spun rod or main bearing. All those things are repairable, just expensive. An engine rebuilder might give you a few bucks for the engine as a "rebuildable core". Jerry

If it's a stock '50 216 there are better choices. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 457 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 457 | There are goners, and then there are goners. If it is frozen up from sitting, the cylinders and rings have rusted, and may be freed up with kroil, kerosene, or some other penetrant. Might be salvageable. BUT, if it is really seized and not just stuck, as in OVERHEATED meltdown, scored cylinders, burned up bearings and such, it may not be worth the effort and cost to mess with. But still, somebody may want the head, manifolds, etc., so it has some value. Maybe only scrap value. Might try post in parts for sale section, with an honest description, and see if anyone's interested. Good luck!

See the link. I think it's good advice to scrap it. The potential to salvage the engine is slim and would be very expensive. Kim, I would shop for a decent engine. They often appear in the ads on Stovebolt. Reading your blog, don't quit yet. We all know how overwhelming restoration can be at times. Don't look at the big picture just yet. Manifolds, starter, head, bolts, pan etc. Priced out individually they will cost you several hundred dollars to replace. If you have room to park it in a corner, you could scrap it later. The later 235 engines in your area come up often on craigslist. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2011 Posts: 22 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jul 2011 Posts: 22 | Hey Drew, that lady was me Yup that's my rusty pile of scrap metal!!
