Is this a good swap and easy? Want to pull the 216 and 4 spd. Put in 230 and powerglide. Thanks

Get a copy of Leo Santucci's book on hot-rodding Chevrolet 6s. I think you will end up going with a 292 high-deck instead of a 230 or 250. The 292 motor mounts are different from the 230/250, but all three of the late model sixes motor mounts are different from the 216.

You might need a custom drive shaft, but those are available in most large cities.

BTW, The reason I suggest it is that I'm going to put a 292 in my 1951 4400 as soon as I can find a good one. From everything I've read the fan height might be the only problem, and, since I'm planning to use an electric fan, I think I can get around that.

if thats what you have put it in, use motor mounts from buffalo in washington, i like a 250 or 292 but sometimes we need to stay within our budget. i can send you a picture of a 250 with 350 trans installed in a 54 chevy truck send me a email [email protected]

You'll also have to convert to 12 volts for the more modern engines. The only real fab work involved would be the engine and trans mounts, which as stated previously, can be bought almost anywhere that sells AD truck parts.

Too bad you all are not closer, I have all of those engines - 230, 250 and a 292 just sitting in storage and complete.
Good luck,
Scott

I haven't bought the 230 yet but am thinking about it, I have a powerglide. This is just going to be a daily driver & fishing truck, nothing fancy.
Thanks for the replys and John I will email you. Thanks Virg

You are probably going to have to move the radiator forward to fit it, it is longer than the 216.

4ontheFloor, I was going by Santucci's book since I don't have a late model six to measure. From what he wrote the 194/230/250 is about two inches shorter in length than the 235/261 and about 3 inches less in height. Weight savings is 24%.

The 292 is supposed to be the same height as the 235/261, same difference in length and 19% lighter. Does anyone have an early model and a late model 6 to measure?

I bet it will sound great if you put the right exhaust system on it.

Going V-8 is a little more work than a six. Most the old truck venders offer V-8 and transmission crossmembers. Don't ususally cost a whole lot.

The biggest problem with this swap is the interferrence fit between the steering and the exhaust. You can move the steering box out to fix that, or convert to power steering using one of the kits available.
