1st time ever my 63 left me stranded today. Not getting any fuel. I had a can of starting fluid and sprayed in in the carb, it runs until the ether is gone then stalls. I have yet to pour gas in carb, gonna wait until dusk cause it's too blamed hot! I'm thinking fuel pump or filter. It is full of gas, I use lead additive. It was over 100 degrees and I didn't feel like having another heart attack today, so I called a tow ($70.00). Truck is an in-line 6. How much of a P.I.T.A. is it to remove and replace fuel pump? Could anyone please provide step by step or trouble shooting instructions?
Pete

given the high temperatures, it could have just been a vapor lock. see what it wants to do when it is cool in the morning.

edit: and of course check the obvious, is there any gas in the tank?

There are two bolts on the fuel pump, takes 10-15 min to swap. One fuel line in and one out. Fairly simple. The fuel pump is on the passenger side towards the front.

If it comes down to changing the fuel pump, borrow or buy the appropriate line wrenches so you don't round off the fittings with your crescent wrench or pliers.

Full tank of gas, roger that on the fuel line wrenches. I will try to re-start in the AM prior to beginning surgery. Thanks Guys!

you can also disconnect the gas line from carb,
have someone turn the engine over , watch and
see if any gas is being pumped out of the line..

if not you need a fuel pump..

Look for a fuel filter underneath. Often a previous owner has put a filter between the tank & pump on these old trucks. I know I do.

I had a situation like this and the strainer on the end of the pick-up tube on the sending unit in the tank was clogging from the sediment in the tank. When the sediment was agitated and the pump was pulling, it would starve the line of fuel, causing the truck to die. We removed the sock from the end of the sender pick-up tube and installed a good filter in the line between the pump & carb and never had the problem again. After running a few tanks of fuel through it and changing the filter a few times, the sediment was no longer floating around in the tank and the problem went away.

The fuel pump test mentioned above will isolate the problem to the fuel pump, if that is the issue. Good luck.
