On start, choke pulled out, it starts right up, abut smokes a lot. If you hit the throttle you get enough smoke to kill all the mosquitoes in the neighborhood. With the choke in it still smokes on acceleration. It's a dark grey smoke as opposed to white or blue.
Could it just be a tuneup is needed?

Dark grey smoke is a weird color to troubleshoot. I would run the rig for awhile and see what 'cooks off'. If the smoke doesn't smell of raw fuel and the truck is throttle responsive, I can't imagine what would produce that color 'bug bomb'.

As long as it's not white smoke (steam) you don't have a major problem. I'd look at the carburetor as the villan here, probably needs a good cleaning. | | |

What does the exhaust smell like? That's usually a pretty good hint as to what needs tweaking. I'd check for carbon on the plugs, too. That'll tell you for sure whether or not you've got an excess fuel problem. A tune up will never hurt anything, though. I generally give any engine I'm waking up after a long nap a tune up anyway -- just to make sure that she'll fire without ****ing me off.  ~#~#~#~#~ Something else that might cause grey smoke: Did you have any head work done? Sometimes that coating they put on there makes copious amounts of stinky grey smoke. It usually burns off pretty quick, though. Usually within the first 10 minutes, but sometimes -- if it's cold out -- it takes a few more minutes for it to get hot enough to burn off. | | |

#76210 04/11/2007 6:46 PM | Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,094 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,094 | If it's a chevy transmission, powerglide,350 turbo,or 400 turbo it will stop smoking when it runs out of transmission fluid. the vacum modulator is leaking and trans fluid is being sucked into the intake manifold.

I have a 74 Nova with a 350 that doesn't smoke at ALL until you drop it down in 2ND and stomp the gas., then I get that same black/gray smoke. I've tried everything and it still does it.
Always get a 2nd opinion, especially if I am the source of the 1st opinion.
