What the heck causes a backfire? It sure tuns people's heads.

Thursday morning coming home from the grocery store my truck started backfiring when i downshifted, so i said to myself check the points when i get home. About a mile down the road there is a very loud backfire and the truck died,my poor dog who was in the back was not happy. I popped the hood and pulled the dist cap and the pts were closed,turns out the hole for the hold down screw was stripped out. When i got the truck home and replaced the dist. the sound of the truck engine was totally different, the backfire was so big that it had blown my muffler 3 inches open at the seam!
i love my dog's 1965 suburban.
