After initial firing & the usual ignition timing & carb tweaking, engine ran for about 20 minutes at 2000rpm with no smoke or apparent problems. It did get pretty warm, and popped the radiator cap on shutdown...I think I didn't have enough radiator or fan. Upon removal of the headers, I noticed that the entire exhaust path, all ports, was coated with a fine black soot. Plugs were the same. To me, this says rich fuel condition, but in the past I've always noticed some smoke or fuel smell. Any other thoughts? You'll probably need to go down a size or two on jets once the vehicle gets on the road. That will also help out in the power range, as rich-running engines don't make very good power. Wait until you get a few road miles on before tinkering with the mixture, as you might find the engine exhibits different running characteristics under load, but I've found on numerous dyno runs that Edelbrocks need some fine-tuning to get the best output. Most people way over-carburete engines (750 CFM on a 305 engine, for instance) so Edelbrock jets 'em rich from the factory to try to make their carbs idiot-proof. Jerry

I'm pretty sure I'm not over-carb'd with that little 600, but I can see why Ededlbrock would over-jet...better safe than sorry. Engine is still on the stand, so I think I'll run it some more to check some other things and try more rpm's and a different radiator. Thanks for your input.
