Need a fast accurate answer on this. I've got a line on a used trans for cheap. I know it will bolt up to the back of a 261 with an adapter but I'm concerned about the trans mount. It looks like it will be just aft of the torsion bar crossmember. Also I see a problem with front mounts since I will be losing the ones on the old bell housing. Anyone who has done one or read about it, post. I'd surely not want to miss this. Thanks

I had to shave the top of my torsion bar crossmember, reinforce it, and have a local shop fabricate a mount when I added my O.D. I can't tell you about the front mounts. I'd say you need help from a chassis fabricator or good welder.

If the trans is "aft" i.e. in back, of the torsion bar crossmember, then it seems that you are going to run into interference from the X frame, where the drive shaft goes through. Also, it seems that you are going to have to lose the original crossmember that the rear engine motor mounts were attached to. All this is in addition to what the other response said about modifying the torsion bar cross member.

Side mounts will have to be built for the adapter. Very easy to do with steel plate and angle iron. Buffalo's adapter has the holes pre-drilled and tapped for side mounts.

One more thing, you will probably have to modify the center floor board section (the hump part), as I believe that the top of the trans will hit. The center floor board is simply bolted on so that will be easy to take out and modify.

HEY! Thanks for the quick responses! I went ahead and bought that 2004r trans w/a driveshaft. It was too good to pass up! I'm thinking that early 60's trucks w/ a six and powerglide had engine front side mounts. It would require drilling my crossmember but that is where they went and I have the mount holes on the engine as well. But better still would be Cletis' suggestion about the adapter from Buffalo. Where do I find them? I have a spare torsion bar support member that I can modify to accept the transmission mount if that's what it takes. I won't know what I'm up against until I mock it up there and I'll probably be in for some surprises. Keep those ideas coming, PLEASE!
