For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: May 2011 Posts: 30 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: May 2011 Posts: 30 | Trying to find a wiring diagram for a 3 tab 12 volt regulator. I'm not sure that the voltage regulator is an original style. The truck has a alternator that charges when the field is jumped from the battery.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. I really don't want to start fabricating brackets for a 1 wire alternator.
Thanks

The only system I'm aware of other than the internal-regulated 10SI alternator is the 4-wire system shown in the diagram. The 3-wire regulator in the illustration is for a generator, not an alternator. Jerry

It appears to have the original screw down terminal connections, but the VR looks awfully new. I am still tracing down wires to see if it is 4 wire system that has been hosed up.

It makes a huge difference in the wiing and the voltage regulation process!
1962/63 was about the time General Motors switched from generators to alternators. Jerry

There were numerous regulators made for these, both transistorized and mechanical. Could you post a picture of your regulator? There is a spade terminal regulator from the mid to late 60s that could be used to regulate this alternator, using this regulator only requires two connections, one from the ignition switch to the number three terminal, and one from the "F" terminal to the field connection at the alternator, hope that helps. | | | | | Joined: May 2011 Posts: 30 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: May 2011 Posts: 30 | Here is a pic of the regulator as wired when I bought it. http://www.flickr.com/photos/rlsidebottom/5826019744/in/photostreamA new issue cropped up after tracing some wires down. THe engine will continue running after the key switch is turned off. You have to kill it with the master battery switch that was installed at the Fire body manufacture.

It does mention that there's a relay used to energize the alternator on startup. If the relay has been eliminated, it's possible there's a back-feed to the ignition circuit that would keep it running on shutdown. The regulator you picture does not look like an original-equipment Delco item, and it might be wired somewhat differently internally. The transistorized regulator used with that alternator was much more common, and it only had a 3-wire connector, with the regulator base grounded to the body metal. I ran one on a 64 White Freightliner, set up for positive ground. Jerry

3B and Hotrod, The issue with it running after the key is turned off just started. There is a master battery switch that I can use to shut it down.
Thanks for all the help, when I get smart, I'll try and return the favor.
