My 54 3100 has 62 235 and stock 54 hydramatic. Have any of you with the same set up had problems with finding a replacement starter? Seems that the nose is longer than a starter from the other cars and trucks of the same year.

Ted I have a similar set up as yours... Does your starter work at all or even fit ? Try Chevs of the 40's they list a STARTER -PASSENGER & DUBL-DUTI TRUCK Item # 1913369 ... Same part # as in
1929 - 1954 Chevrolet MASTER PARTS and ACCESSORIES CATALOG Section 2.041 ...

Here is a better explanation of what is needed for the 1954 Hydra-Matic (H.T.) starter - a different drive end housing on a 49-54 car (non Powerglide) and 49-55 D.D. 6v starter or 1953 Corvette (special engine with Powerglide) starter (2.041 - 1913369 and 1925869).

Thanks for the Chevs of the 40s link. They also have the solenoid and other repair/replacement parts for the starter.

I assume that you are using the 62 motor but the flywheel and transmission adapter plate are still from your 54? It is enclosed driveshaft right? Don't get bogged down in the 6V 12V stuff. you will still use the 6V starter as that is what will match up to the flywheel. If the truck is converted to 12V, You can do what I did. On the advice that a 6V solenoid running on 12V would be a little "harsh" hitting the flywheel teeth, I found a 12V solenoid that fit. The starter motor itself will be fine on 12V and last easily as long as you don't grind it for extended periods.

Healingbear, My starter/solenoid had worked fine for a couple of years. Since I last replaced brushes anyway. Not sure if the starter shown in the photo is the same as mine. Mine has a longer nose (maybe 3/4 to 1 inch) more than the normal starter of this year.

Ted here are my Starter Pics ... I had my starter rebuilt in early 1990's but it did not get much use until the last couple of years...

Healingbear...Thanks for the pics. That is the same starter that I have. My truck is back on the road again as of this afternoon. The mechanic took parts from my second starter and made my original work again. Going to send the second one off to have it rebuilt at a reputable shop. Thanks for all of your help.

I also have a 54 3100 chevy with a Hydro Matic 4 speed . I came across 1954 chevrolet truck specifications it list a Delco Remy #1107135 as the Hydro Matic starter i talked to Delco Remy tech support and they said that #1107843 12V was a direct replacement. if you find an exter i need one
