A 12 volt flywheel will have 168 teeth. A 6 volt flywheel will have 139 teeth.
It is possible to run a 6 volt starter on 12 volts, but it is not possible to run a 12 volt starter on 6.
I would never tell you to put the 228 back in... I would tell you to lose the 235 and put a gmc 270 or even better a gmc 302 in place of the 228!
