Got the cam pulled and am waiting on my new one from Patricks. I bought what he calls a 254 grind. Anyone used one of these? My real question is this when I reassemble the cam and gear what is best proceedure? Also my 56 motor had side mounts my 54 truck has a front mount. How do I handle this?

Find a auto parts store or machine shop with a press if you don't have one. As for the motor mount, I belive you can swap the front plate off the 54 on to the 56 motor before you install the cam and crankshaft. | | |

When you have the gear pressed on, you will need to take the the old cam/gear with you, they're going to need the thrust plate from the old cam for the new one (I'm assuming the you got a new gear for the cam) as it isn't included with the new parts. As far as I know, the thrust plate isn't being made at this time.
I'm not certain about the 254 grind, but I'm running an M4F 3/4 grind cam from Patrick's, and I really like it. Lots of power and the sound is awesome. Most folks think I've got a smallblock in it when they hear it run.

The grind you mention is to the best of my knowledge a little bit higher lift cam for higher horsepower whereas the M4F is a torquier grind. Is "torquier" a real word or did I just make that up?  He used to have F298 that was the higher lift model. Maybe the 254 is a duplicate of the Chevrolet 261 cam, anyone know? | | |
