I painted the interior of my truck with PPG Omini base-coat and then clear-coat. Unfortunately I didn't take the doors off and now, as I'm ready to paint the exterior, I did remove the doors. I notice the pillars and door surfaces on the hinge side are not the best. I would like to re-do them. The question is, do I need to completely remove the clear-coat before touching up the base-coat, or can I scuff the clear-coat, and then base-coat and clear-coat on top of that? Thanks.

As a general rule paint is only a pigmented adhesive. It should make no difference where it's the colored base or the clear coat. Sanding with the correct grit paper should allow you to re-shoot your jams. Having said that, my experience with modern materials is limited so if I'm full of beans someone will point it out. grin

If you used the metallic color inside you may have to remove all the clear. If it is a solid color you can scuff the clear with as fine as 800-1000 grit and apply more base to that, then re-clear. That is what the pros told me and it seemed to work for me. Maybe you can get away with that technique with metallics too in the location you need to fix but someone more experienced will have to address that.

I'd be really surprised if the presence of metallic in the paint underneath the clear would make any difference in adhesion of additional coats to the clear.

The paint is not metallic. Thanks for for the responses, much appreciated. Along the way, we determined Tiny is not full of beans.

Tiny- the explanation I got regarding metallic paint had nothing to do with adherence. It has to do with the light refracting thru multiple layers. I was told it might work but chances are you would see a difference with metallic paint. The solid colors do not share this problem. I have unfortunately had to fix this type of problem (not enough basecoat) a few times. I don't know how I miss some areas but I do.

That might be Chuck if it's one of the translucent base colors in vogue these days. Good tip. Don, it's good to see I won't be stinking the place up today. grin
